The buzz surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team could be crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths that are viable if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, frequently in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, players can anticipate more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
