Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
